Banksy Is an English graffiti artist/painter/political activist/the best man in the world! lol
His graffiti is famous for it's dark humor and contraversal anti-government messages.
He's been around for years but does his work in disguise and has a tight team behind him so that his identity has remained a secret. After purchasing his book I've become obsessed with some of his work, So I thought I'd share it here...
The Palestine Segregation wall
The wall began being built by the Isreali Government, it's main purpose is to separate the Isreali and Palestinian population to stop the friction between the two. The wall is guarded by armed guards in watchtowers. It is three times the height of the Berlin wall and will eventually run for over 700km. For Banksy this was the perfect place to Graffiti.
Where does Banksys Fascination with rats come from? He explains it in his book...
'They exist without permission. They are hated, hunted and persecuted. They live in quiet desperation amongst the filth. And yet they are capable of bringing entire civilisations to their knees.'
'If you are dirty, insignificant and unloved then rats are the ultimate role model.'
'When you go to an art gallery you are simply a tourist looking at the trophy cabinet of a few millionaires.'
Banksy believes that everyone should have a say when it comes to art. This is why he (or one of his people) strolled into the Tate, London, and the Louevre, Paris, wearing a hat and a fake beard, and hung up some of his own work.
Among some of the paintings he hung up was one of his take on Andy Warhols Cambells soup can.
Andy Warhols Cambells soup can.
Elephant in the room
For his exhibition in LA, Banksy painted a live elephant with non toxic dye from head to toe in red and gold paint to match the wallpaper of a sitting room set up to represent how poverty is widely ignored. This caused uproar from animal rights activists and headlined newspapers everywhere making Banksy more famous than ever.
Ten pound notes
Another prank/piece of art Banksy created was replicating thousands of £10 pound notes and throwing them into the crowds at various music festivals. Instead of reading 'Bank of England' the notes said 'Banksy of England' and the queens face was replaced by the face of Princess Diana.
I'll leave you with some of his work... enjoy! X
